Looking for a super easy-to-make dessert? Look no more but the so-called ‘fruit fool’.
What is it in the first place?
A fruit fool is a traditional English dessert usually made with pureed fruit. It is pretty, elegant, light, and creamy, plus you can whip it up in just minutes. When entertaining a crowd, you can simply dollop this treat into your prettiest clear glass dessert dish for a beautiful presentation. It is perfect for entertaining, indeed!
Why Is It Called a ‘Fool’?
Believe it or not, the fool dessert has been around for centuries. It was mentioned in the 15th century, and it is still very popular up to this day and age. I would say this dessert is magical. I really like how it looks once it is all done.
It is believed that the word ‘fool’ came from the French word ‘fouler’, which means to smash or crush. This sweet treat involves pureed fruits or berries, so the term is just appropriate. But hey, no matter what the origin of the name is, one thing is for sure, you and your family and guests will certainly love this elegant dessert.

Blackberry Fool
- Total Time: 30 minutes + chilling time
- Yield: 6 1x
Description
This Blackberry Fool is a classic British dessert. Blackberry puree is swirled through whipped cream, which makes it really pretty. It is loaded with lightly sweet, tart flavor. And all you need is six simple ingredients!
Ingredients
3 cups blackberries, plus more for serving
1/4 c. granulated sugar
juice of 1 lemon
1/4 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 c. heavy whipping cream
Instructions
Blackberries:
- Using a food processor or blender, puree the blackberries.
- Press the puree, using the back of a large spoon, through a fine-mesh strainer set over a medium saucepan. Get rid of the seeds.
- Add the lemon juice and granulated sugar to the puree. Over medium heat, bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer while stirring frequently for about 10 minutes or until thickened.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool. Put in the fridge if needed.
Whipped cream:
- In a medium bowl, combine the cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla.
- Beat on low using an electric mixer until it starts to thicken, and increase the speed to medium and then high. Beat until stiff, firm peaks form.
How to assemble:
- Spoon 3/4 of the puree into the whipped cream. Fold 3 or 4 turns. This should make thick streaks of the blackberry puree remain visible.
- Divide the Blackberry Fool mixture between 6 decorative glasses.
- Drizzle with the remaining puree.
- Top with fresh blackberries and a sprig of mint if desired.
Notes
- You can use frozen or fresh blackberries.
- When beating the cream, be sure that firm peaks form, but not dry. It should still be creamy and not clumpy.
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
You can serve Blackberry Fool immediately. Or, if you have more time, you can refrigerate it for about an hour. Doing this will allow the flavors to blend well, giving you a more delightful dessert.
Looks delicious!
