Green Tea Mochi

Trying new recipes for desserts will surely make every dinner more exciting to look forward to for your family. If you haven’t tried something oriental for dessert, green tea mochi can be the best way to introduce Asian desserts to your children and hubby. They will surely love this Japanese treat. It is very easy to make them.

Your family will surely not get tired of these chewy and sticky green balls as you can alternate different fillings, such as red bean paste, strawberry, and even ice cream. Because it only takes 15 minutes to make them, making more mochi balls with different fillings and mixing them all together on a tray for dinner can be possible! You can store the rest for your afternoon tea the next day.

Green Tea Mochi

The appearance alone of this Japanese treat is so enticing. The mochi balls look soft with powdery green color. The mochi layer has an earthy flavor with a sticky and chewy texture. On the other hand, the taste of the filling depends on the filling you use. For this recipe, we are using red bean paste which you can make on your own.



6 tbsp. or 50g of Mochiko or Shiratamako sweet rice flour, 50g

2 tbsp. of sugar

1/2 tsp. of matcha powder

6 tbsp. of water

¼ cup of cornstarch for dusting

½ cup red bean paste


  1. Mix together mochiko, sugar, and green tea powder in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Pour water. Mix well until all is dissolved completely. Loosely cover the bowl using a plastic wrap or kitchen towel.
  3. At full power, microwave for 2 minutes. Take the bowl out of the microwave and mix again with a wet spatula.
  4. Put the cover back and microwave for another 30 seconds or until the dough becomes a little more translucent.
  5. Generously dust with cornstarch a sheet of parchment paper placed on the working surface.
  6. From the microwave-safe bowl, transfer the dough onto the parchment paper. Sprinkle the dough with more cornstarch.
  7. Using a knife or a dough scraper, divide the dough into 4 equal parts.
  8. Flatten the dough into a circular shape (with a diameter of about 3.5 inches and 1/8 inch thickness), using your hands.
  9. Spoon red bean paste and place it at the center of the mochi wrapper.
  10. Pinch the corners of the mochi wrapper. To close the mochi wrapper completely, pinch the remaining corners together.
  11. Tap the bottom of the mochi with cornstarch. To remove excess cornstarch, brush gently the assembled green tea mocha.


  • Making the red bean paste on your own will ensure you have the right consistency and sweetness. Add rinsed beans into a saucepan with water and bring it to boil. Discard the water and change it with more water.
  • Cook until beans are set which means you can easily mash the beans with your finger. Drain the water again and add sugar. Over medium heat, continue cooking while constantly stirring until it reaches the consistency you desire.

Storing your red bean mochi balls in an airtight container and refrigerating them will ensure that you can continue to satisfy your cravings on these delectable Japanese treats for the next two days without having to make new ones. They are also perfect for your afternoon tea.

You can also fill your mochi balls with sweetened peanuts if you want.
